Poster art - more specifically gig poster art - is going through a BIG resurgence in the last few years. There is just some incredible stuff out there by some great designers/artists. I have been collecting silkscreen gig posters for the last few years and have come to know some of these artists a little in the process. I thought some of you might be interested in checking out some of their work.

BHTM has had a few posters done in the past. I'll post a few of those at some point as well. I'll dig through the archives and post a few at a time. As long as I am not boring people to death, I'll update it every so often.

Duncan,
You're probably familiar with the Flatstock festivals then . There was a poster exhibition in Austin last March at the S x SW Music Festival that Big Head Todd played at.The Flatstock site gives a lot of gallery links: http://www.flatstock.com/designers.php. I don't collect, but I definitely have been a "gig poster" fan for a long time, beginning with circus posters, WPA murals, Diego Rivera murals, and posters from the acid test era.The punk scene gave way to low-end type gig handouts, many black and white, collages with cutout letters, crazy drawings or political in nature. Today styles of posters have really broadened. I miss the record album covers of yore, but there is still some great CD cover art. Look forward to seeing more.

Lynne,

Yes, while I haven't been able to attend any of the 6 Flatstock festivals, I am familiar with them. I wish they would have one relatively close to where I live one of these years. I would love to go.

Austin actually has a great poster art community. There are a number of artist in or around that area. Matter of fact, Todd Slater (they artist who's work I just posted above) is from Austin, I believe.

Just a little note about the Ames Borthers stuff: They have been doing posters for Pearl Jam for the last, oh... five years or so. Pearl Jam does posters for a great deal of their shows (maybe all now?) on thier tour. The sell for about $10 at the show. Of course they sell out. And then they fetch MUCH more afterwards from collectors. Just do a secrh on eBay for 'Pearl Jam, posters' and check out what's going on their. We're talking hundreds of dollars for some of these. Their all silkscreens, by the way.

Other bands have caught on. Not producing posters to teh extent of Pearl Jam, but you'll see more bands doing this now as a result.

Alright... more posters.
