Any body read any of his stuff?  I don't know anything about him.  Just picked up his new book A New Earth at the library this weekend - at first glance, it looked kind of relevant to our discussions.  Just curious...

I have not read or heard much about the author, but I have heard a great deal about his book "Power of Now". From my understanding that book stresses on a philosophical notion that there is nothing real except the present. The past and the present are illusions.

I believe he uses this to empower his readers to focus on the now and not worry about what-ifs, past, future, etc. It sounded like a "self-help" book to me, so I never picked it up myself. I prefer to take the philosophical understanding offered in these sort of books and attach it to my own understanding. I find that to be far more useful. On occasion when I have read some interesting sounding "self-help"books, they never go into the "why" and just stick to the "how". As a philosophically minded, I find that most dissatisfying. Its like a joke without a punch line.

my 2 cents

Thanks, Pi. I share your wariness of the self-help genre. I'll take a gander and report back ...

Now that "A New Earth" is getting international attention thanks to Oprah, I'm wondering if anyone here has read or reread it?

I just picked this book up because I've had some great discussions with my clients regarding its content...  I have to finish another one before I get to it, but from what it sounds like, this book is about dispelling the ego and being true yourself.  That is to be quite general, but some interesting things may pop up for discussion...  even though the "Oprah" involvement makes me wary to say the least.

i am currently reading tolle's ' the power of now'.  it was suggested by a friend a while back.  i have to say that i am finding it interesting.  while 'living in the now' might not be a revolutionary concept, i find his approach what makes it a good read so far (i am only about 1/3 into the book).  he basically calls 'the past' and 'the future' a disease of the mind that causes people to miss out on true happiness and the real experience of life (i'm generalizing, of course).  at this point in my life, that seems to be hitting a bit of a note.  i'll be sure to post more thoughts about it when i am done.

i am curious about 'a new earth'.  if this book goes well, i will most likely be picking that up soon as well.

I got The Power of Now (audio book) as a present for Christmas and started listening a couple of weeks ago - I'm about half way through it.  What I am getting is a guide book on awakening, which many before Tolle have taught. He does have an ease about him in the way the message is conveyed.  He's teaching how to live in the present, which results in appreciation of the flow of life from one experience to the next.  That in turn makes you realize you don't have a whole lot of control, which is actually freeing! So far, so good...
